RoadWise Councils

RoadWise Councils is an initiative by WALGA to proactively engage, motivate, prepare and position Local Governments to make an effective and sustainable contribution to road safety outcomes. The initiative helps Councils adopt and embed evidence-led policies and practices aligned with national and state road safety priorities.

About Us

About RoadWise

RoadWise is WALGA’s road safety program for Local Governments in Western Australia. Local Government plays a vital, yet often under-recognised, role in road safety. WALGA’s RoadWise connects state and national road safety priorities with local delivery, providing guidance and support to help Local Governments make a meaningful difference on their road networks.

RoadWise Key Projects

RoadWise Framework

The RoadWise Framework provides a structured, practical model to help Local Governments plan, prioritise, embed and deliver road safety initiatives aligned with the Safe System and in a consistent and effective way.

Role of Local Government in Road Safety

Local Governments play a critical role in road safety. They manage an extensive local road network and influence land use, community leadership and service delivery. WALGA’s RoadWise supports Local Governments to strengthen these roles and embed road safety into everyday decision-making.

Safe System Approach

The Safe System approach recognises that people make mistakes and that the road transport system should be designed to minimise the risk of serious injury or death. WALGA’s RoadWise supports Local Governments to apply Safe System principles locally.

Funding Acknowledgement

Funding Acknowledgement

To deliver the RoadWise Program, WALGA applies for, and receives funding through the Road Trauma Trust Account (speed and red light camera fines) and the State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement (sourced from WA vehicle licensing fees).

WALGA would like to acknowledge the Minister responsible for road safety, the Road Safety Council, the Road Safety Commission and the State Advisory Committee for administrating the funding to deliver RoadWise, the Local Government road safety program for Western Australia.
