The RoadWise Program supports Local Governments to build their capacity and capability to adopt best practice road safety approaches and effectively manage the safety performance of their local road networks.
Local Governments play a vital, but often under-recognised, role in improving road safety. RoadWise bridges the gap between national and state road safety priorities and local action, providing Councils with guidance, tools and support to make a meaningful difference in their communities.
Underpinned by evidence-based approaches, the RoadWise Program is aligned with the RoadWise Framework, which guides Local Governments in applying best practice to manage road safety performance in a structured and sustainable way.
By supporting Local Governments to strengthen how road safety is governed, planned, delivered and evaluated, RoadWise helps prevent death and serious injury on local roads.
What WALGA’s RoadWise Does
With a strong understanding of the diverse needs and capabilities of Western Australian Local Governments, WALGA is well placed to engage and support Local Governments in improving road safety practice. Through this support, RoadWise contributes to the achievement of national and state road safety strategy objectives, Global Road Safety Targets and relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Funding
To deliver the RoadWise Program, WALGA applies for, and receives funding through the Road Trauma Trust Account (speed and red light camera fines) and the State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement (sourced from WA vehicle licensing fees).
WALGa would like to acknowledge the Minister responsible for road safety, the Road Safety Council, the Road Safety Commission and the State Advisory Committee for administrating the funding to deliver RoadWise, the Local Government road safety program for Western Australia.
RoadWise Framework
The RoadWise Framework provides a clear, evidence-based structure to help Local Governments plan, deliver and evaluate road safety actions. It supports consistent, best practice approaches to improving road safety performance across WA.
Role of Local Government in Road Safety
Local Governments influence road safety through policy, infrastructure, planning, operations and community engagement. RoadWise supports Councils to understand and strengthen this role, contributing to improved road safety outcomes at local, state and national levels.
Safe System Approach
The Safe System approach recognises that people make mistakes and that the road system should be designed to prevent serious injury and death. RoadWise supports Local Governments to apply Safe System principles across their areas of influence.
