Child Car Seat Safety Essentials

Using an appropriate child car seat can greatly reduce the risk of death or serious injury if a crash occurs. The following information is intended as a quick reference guide to help parents and carers use child car seats correctly.

Please note all child car seats must be correctly adjusted and securely fastened.

Birth to 6 months

  • Rearward-facing child car seat, either a capsule or rearward-facing convertible seat.
  • These seats include an inbuilt harness and a top tether strap.

6 months to 4 years

  • Rearward-facing child car seat, or
  • Forward-facing child car seat with an inbuilt harness.
  • These seats include an inbuilt harness and a top tether strap.

4 to 7 years

  • Forward-facing child car seat with an inbuilt harness, or
  • Booster seat or combination seat used in booster mode with a lap-sash seatbelt or child safety harness.
  • Some of these seats may not include a top tether strap.

The Australian Standard Child restraint systems for use in motor vehicles (AS/NZS 1754:2010, 2013 and 2024) is based on a child’s age and height. This differs from earlier versions of the Standard, where weight needed to be considered.

Child car seats more than 10 years old are no longer recommended for use, in line with best-practice guidelines.
