Policy and Advocacy

WALGA’s road safety team advocates on behalf of Local Governments to ensure their voices are heard in the development of national, state and regional road safety policy and regulatory frameworks.

Through participation in key forums, committees, advisory and working groups, the team represents Local Government priorities and promotes best practice road infrastructure management.

The team develops sector-wide advocacy positions, agreements, and plans to support Local Governments to adopt and apply best practice approaches to managing road safety performance.

Key Areas of Work

WALGA represents Local Government interests and priorities through participation in key road safety bodies, including:

  • Road Safety Council
  • State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement (SRFLGA)
  • SRFLGA Road Safety Working Group
  • Road Safety Audit Panel
  • Australian Local Government Association (ALGA)

WALGA contributes to the development of legislation and external policy through active participation in:
 
  • Austroads working groups
  • Regional Road Groups
  • Other committees and forums influencing road safety policy and practice

WALGA undertakes responsive and proactive policy development on road safety issues, including:
 
  • Speed management reform
  • The role of Local Governments in the future management of warden-controlled children’s crossings
  • Land clearing in road reserves
  • Separation (centre) and edge line markings on low-volume Local Government roads

WALGA delivers targeted advocacy activities to support improved road safety outcomes for Local Government communities, including:
 
  • Submissions, delegations and correspondence to advocate for Local Government needs
  • Advocacy for appropriate funding, resources and legislative reform from State and Federal Governments
  • Development of business cases, such as the Regional Road Network Safety Improvements program on high-speed Local Government roads in WA
