Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter Course

52862WA – Course in Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting

Western Australia is leading the way in child car seat safety through a nationally accredited course designed to support the correct installation and use of child car seats.

Delivered as part of the Child Car Seat Safety initiative funded by the Road Safety Council and coordinated by WALGA’s RoadWise Program, the course aims to increase the number of qualified Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters across WA.

The Road Safety Commission has worked closely with key stakeholders, including Kidsafe WA, WALGA RoadWise and the Red Cross, to develop two accredited units of competency covering correct installation and the provision of advice on child car seat use.

Why become a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter?

Type 1 Child Car Restraint (CCR) Fitters are authorised to correctly fit child car seats to an approved standard and provide advice and consumer information regarding different types of child car seats and their suitability for use according to a child’s age and size.

Type 1 CCR Fitters may choose to offer fitting and checking services voluntarily to the community or on a fee-for-service basis. Fitters receive ongoing advice and professional support through WALGA’s Child Car Seat Safety Officer, other experienced practitioners and online resources.

To be registered as a Type 1 CCR Fitter after successfully completing the course, individuals must:

  • hold a Statement of Attainment for the 52862WA Course in Type 1 CCR Fitting

  • sign and agree to comply with the Business Rules for Fitters, and

  • provide evidence of $10 million public liability insurance.

Course Information

This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to competently check and fit child car seats in vehicles and to be part of a statewide network of approved Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters.

The course includes both theory and practical components and enables participants to operate checking and fitting services within their organisation or community.

The course is nationally accredited and delivered through WALGA Training (RTO 51992).

It is funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account and supported by the Road Safety Council.

The course consists of two units of competency:

  • Literacy skills to read and apply vehicle and child car seat manuals, information from legislation and Australian Standards, and use checking forms
  • Physical agility to access anchorage points, fit attachments, and inspect and install child car seats
  • Visual acuity to observe signs of wear and tear, read labels and dates of manufacture
  • Sufficient mechanical aptitude to use hand tools and make adjustments
