Introduction to Waste and Landfill Management

Course overview

Waste management is an essential service provided by, or on behalf of, Local Government. It is a complex and high-cost operation, with many opportunities to improve Local Governments environmental, social and economic outcomes.

WALGA has developed training covering waste identification and separation, waste avoidance, behaviour change and education. This training also covers the regulatory, operational and long‑term management requirements for landfill sites.

Who should attend

This on‑site course is suitable for Local Government officers whose roles directly or indirectly involve waste management. It is designed to build capability and strengthen all aspects of waste management service delivery within Local Government.

Learning outcomes

Waste Management:

  • Applied understanding of how to store and separate waste to support effective resource recovery
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and policy frameworks
  • Capability in delivering waste education and supporting behaviour change initiatives
  • Awareness of waste‑avoidance strategies, tools and approaches

Landfill Management:

  • Practical knowledge of landfill management
  • Familiarity with licensing conditions and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of the long‑term management needs and future planning considerations for landfills.

  • On-site at your Local Government for up to 20 participants
