Australian Fire Danger Rating System

On Thursday, 1 September 2022, the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) will be introduced across Australia. This will mean that wherever people are in Australia, they will see and access consistent fire danger advice.

AFDRS.PNGThis project has involved the development of new signage design with revised Ratings (depicted right), new messaging to accompany the revised Ratings, a review of the WA Fire Weather Districts to improve communication of the Ratings, and complimentary legislation change to the Bush Fires Act 1954 and Regulations. The DFES Project Team are working to assist in the communications of the new System, procurement of signage, and support the development of training at a national level.

Bush Fire Risk Treatment Standards for residential and public buildingsbushfire-risk-treatment-cover-pic.PNG

In November 2020, the Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner published new Bush Fire Risk Treatment Standards for Western Australia. The Standards provide owners and occupiers of land within specified areas of the State the ability to undertake specific vegetation management activities around residential and public buildings without breaching State or local law. To read the Standards, open the PDF here, or read the Guide for applying the Bush Fire Risk Treatment Standards.

WALGA hosted a webinar to provide information on using the Standards in November 2020. The webinar recording is available here.
