The WA Local Government Association welcomes the State Government’s announcement of $5.1 million in bushfire mitigation grants for 41 Local Governments across Western Australia.
This funding enables Local Governments to implement carry out physical mitigation treatments on Crown land, including planned burns and establishing or maintaining firebreaks.
WALGA President Mark Irwin AM welcomed the funding from the State Government and highlighted the critical role Local Governments played in emergency management.
“Local Governments are at the frontline of emergency response across Western Australia and are best placed to identify and address bushfire risks in their communities,” he said.
“This funding supports Local Governments to plan and invest strategically, ensuring mitigation funding is directed where it delivers the greatest impact on risk reduction.”
WA’s increasingly severe fire seasons demand a shift from reactive suppression to proactive, locally-driven mitigation.
WALGA will continue to call for the Mitigation Activity Fund Grant Program to be expanded, enabling Local Governments to take coordinated, on-the-ground action that reduces bushfire risk and builds long-term resilience.
