On Friday, 14 November WALGA officially welcomed newly Elected Members with the New Elected Member Seminar.
After being welcomed to the sector by WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP, attendees heard from the Minister for Local Government, the Hon Hannah Beazley MLA, and received an overview of the role of the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) from the Director General, Lanie Chopping.
WALGA CEO Nick Sloan also provided an overview of WALGA’s role as the authoritative voice and trusted partner for Western Australian Local Government, including the further training opportunities and support available for Elected Members.
In addition to sessions from LGIS and Civic Legal, attendees heard from WALGA Executive Manager Member Services Kirsty Martin, Director of Development and Community Services at the City of South Perth Donna Shaw speaking on the essentials of planning, City of Vincent Mayor Alison Xamon about community leadership, and City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott and Chief Executive Officer Virginia Miltrup about the relationship between a CEO and a Mayor or President.
The event provided an opportunity for new Elected Members to meet their peers, learn more about the sector, and develop an initial understanding of the importance of their role, and what it means to effectively serve their community.
