WALGA updates

Last week, WALGA’s Executive Director Member of Services Tony Brown and Contract Manager, Development Brian Ging visited the Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands to discuss Local Government issues and deliver Council Member Essentials (CME) training to Elected Members.

WALGA aims to deliver member-centric services by offering training in a range of flexible delivery solutions to suit metropolitan, regional, and remote locations including,

  • face-to-face training at WALGA

  • on-site training at Local Governments

  • virtual classrooms, and

  • eLearning

The member visit included meeting with the Chief Executive Officer and Senior staff from the Shire and discussing issues affecting the Shire and to discuss the services that WALGA provides.

Each module of CME training focuses on a different topic, building the knowledge and skills required of Councillors in a step-by-step approach, developing a deeper understanding over time, filled with practical tips and tools for Councillors to perform their role and responsibilities as defined in the Local Government Act 1995. The training delivered focused on Understanding Local Government, Conflicts of Interest and Meeting procedures.

All new or re-elected members are required to complete the WALGA’s Council Member Essentials course within 12 months of being elected.
