More resilient Mobile Telecommunications in the Wheatbelt and Goldfields
WALGA was pleased with the State Government announcement this week of $2.9 million investment funding ($1.9m State Government and $1m from Telstra) to help secure critical mobile telecommunication service coverage during extended power outages.

Through WALGA Zones, Local Governments have been calling for arrangements to be put in place that would allow back-up generators to be connected to mobile telecommunications infrastructure to keep services running.

The new program will see 80 Automatic Transfer Units deployed to locations in the Wheatbelt and Goldfields, selected on the basis of the role of these facilities in providing coverage. This equipment enables local people, other than Telstra technicians, to be trained to connect a portable generator at the mobile tower when mains power fails. Where required, generators will be sourced under the program and deployed to the communities.

This program goes some way towards delivering on the opportunity included in WALGA’s 2025 State Election Priorities, for the State Government to work with industry and the Commonwealth to 'address gaps in mobile telecommunications resilience'.  If successful, it is hoped that this program will be expanded in future to cover additional areas.
