Local Government Convention wrap up
The Convention van has been unpacked and the WALGA team is back in the office reflecting on the top ten moments from LGC24. What were yours?

A more fulsome report will be published in the October edition of Western Councillor and through WALGA social media. But here are some of our memorable LGC moments, in no particular order…

1. The unveiling of the all-new beautiful and emotional Dancing on Country video, featuring First Nations people from across Western Australia, followed by the amazing Katy Steele and the incredible WALGA State Councillor and City of Kwinana Deputy Mayor, Barry Winmar’s Welcome to Country.

2. Masterfully moderated by media legend Gareth Parker, The State of Play panel session with high profile State politicians – Former Premier the Hon. Colin Barnett MLA AC, former Nats leader the Hon. Brendon Grylls MLA and Labor big hitter the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC was feisty, provocative and entertaining.

4. When the Mayor of Cockburn Logan Howlett received his WALGA Life Membership award he dedicated it to his wife Pat, who has been to every single Council meeting since 1990.  Aww.. there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

5. Walking into the cocktail gala at The Kingsman at Langley Park, and the spectacular entertainment. Just wow.

6. Planning and Housing Minister the Hon. John Carey MLA decribing at the Planning Showcase, that the Western Australian population will reach 3 million people this summer. Think about that number, and what it means for our Member Councils.

7. The MC work of Ms Di Darmody - thank you, Di.

8. The Convention getting a bit of mainstream media: renewables, funding for high-speed local roads.

9. The high quality of the LGC24 Presenters was memorable throughout. From His Excellency The Honourable Christopher John Dawson AC APM, to Local Government Minister the Hon. Hannah Beazley MLA and all the keynotes: Micheal McQueen, Lucinda Hartley, Mark Reed, Dr Chadden Hunter and State Opposition Leader the Hon. Shane Love MLA. The presenters covered the theme of Innovation Ecosystem with skill and inspirational content.
