When Georgie Carey stood for Council in 2017, she wanted more young people to see themselves at the decision‑making table. Elected at age 21, she became one of the youngest Councillors in Australia and went on to serve for eight years, including two terms as Deputy Mayor.
Across her time on Council, Georgie focused on collaboration and visible outcomes; from co‑designing the Town’s Strategic Community Plan to driving record investment in urban canopy and helping shift the culture between Elected Members and staff.
Georgie championed youth leadership, serving nearly seven years on the Youth Affairs Council of WA (two as Chair), representing Australia at the G(irls)20 Global Summit in Tokyo, and joining the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program on Women in Politics.
How the Diploma of Local Government – Elected Member supported Georgie's role
“The Diploma gave me a strong grounding in the governance and legislative frameworks that underpin everything we do as Elected Members. It helped me make more informed decisions and engage more confidently in complex policy discussions. It was also a great way to connect with Councillors from across the State and learn from their experiences,” said Georgie.
Supported by WALGA’s Jacqui Dodd Scholarship, Georgie completed the Diploma of Local Government – Elected Member in 2020, strengthening the skills and confidence that shaped her leadership approach.
Advice for new Elected Members
“Take the time to learn; about your community, your fellow Councillors and how Local Government really works. Approach differences with curiosity, not defensiveness, and remember the best outcomes come from working collaboratively. And if you can, complete courses from WALGA Training early, it’s a game‑changer,” Georgie said.
What’s next for Georgie?
In July 2025, Georgie stepped away from Council to pursue further study. She is now based in Boston, undertaking a Master in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, where she’s exploring how participatory governance can help cities tackle complex challenges through collaboration between governments and communities.
