Submissions for Showcase in Pixels are now closed and finalist will be announced soon. Showcase in Pixels is the preeminent Local Government Art Competition, hosted by WALGA with entries received from our 139 Member Councils.

Meet the judges

Connie Petrillo - Curator of Cultural Collections, City of Perth

Connie Petrillo

Connie Petrillo is an accomplished Western Australian artist and curator with extensive academic and professional credentials. Connie holds a PhD from Curtin University, a Master of Curatorial Studies in Fine Arts, and a Postgraduate Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Western Australia. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts, specialising in Painting and Photo Media, from Edith Cowan University, and a Diploma in Art Studies from the Perth School of Art and Design.

With over 27 years of experience in art registration and curatorial management, Connie has built a wide-reaching professional network across Australia. Currently serving as the Curator for the City of Perth Cultural Collections, she has previously held positions as Curator and Manager Arts Program for Saint John of God Health Care and as Curator and Manager of the Edith Cowan University Art Collection. Throughout her career, she has curated and presented numerous exhibitions and developed educational and promotional programs at both local and national levels, a commitment she continues at the City of Perth.


Julia Robinson-White - Arts Officer - Art Collection, City of Stirling

Julia Robinson

Julia Robinson-White is a curator and collection manager with over 15 years’ experience in the Western Australian arts industry. Julia has worked with the Cities of Stirling, Joondalup, Melville and South Perth managing art collections, exhibitions, art awards and public art programmes. She has also worked for Corporate and Not-for-Profit clients as curator, collection advisor and public art consultant. Julia is passionate about developing art collections as significant cultural and financial assets for public benefit. She feels very privileged to collaborate with talented artists and creatives in her work, to source and present quality contemporary art experiences to the community of Western Australia.

Jenna Pickering

A resident of Tom Price in the Pilbara, Jenna Pickering is one of Western Australia’s most exciting new artists.

While her personality might lean towards the quirky side, her artistic approach is all about integration and finesse. The playfulness in her character finds its balance in the seriousness with which she approaches her craft. The result is a harmonious marriage of whimsy and detail, where each piece resonates with both charm and precision.

As a winner of two awards in The Lester Prize 2024 and the 2023 Cossack Overall winner, Jenna’s connection to regional Australia and love for people brings a unique perspective to Showcase in Pixels.




Zeppo - Content Manager, Yagan Square

Zeppo

Zeppo is a multidisciplinary creative with 14 years' experience in creative technologies and design.

From an early start as a freelance digital designer serving the creative needs of small businesses and NFPs, Zeppo expanded their creative reach into various areas including game design, graphic design, web development, videography, photography, animation and illustration.

Their vibrant and diverse career journey has been complemented by side ventures in the performing arts as an events manager and comedian; but their true passion will always be pixels. If it has pixel, Zeppo's done it; and they consider themself extremely fortunately to be able to call their hobbies jobs.

To date, the highlight of Zeppo's career is their current role managing the arts & media programming of the Yagan Square Digital Tower. Over these few years. Seeing Western Australian artists, creators, students, organisations and individuals showcased on such a high-profile platform is a source of immense joy and pride for Zeppo, and they are delighted that Perth gets to see it all on such a large scale.

Nick Sloan - Chief Executive Officer, WA Local Government Association

Nick Sloan

Born and raised in country WA and with a background in community development, Nick is a proud supporter of Showcase in Pixels.

“I love how our Local Government communities come together to work on the pieces of art that reflect the texture and spirit of people and place. These awards have a great history going right back to the Banners in the Terrace, and I look forward to seeing this year’s submissions on the big digital tower in Yagan Square.” 



This year's theme: ‘Heroes Among Us’

Our core theme this year invites artists to cast a spotlight on those whose dedication and selflessness transcend the ordinary, contributing to the fabric of our communities.

This could range from realistic portraits capturing the steely determination of a first responder, to abstract interpretations that convey the essence of community service.  

The artwork may include mixed media, digital art, paintings, sculptures, or any form of visual art that resonates with the theme.

Competition Categories

The 2024 categories are:

  • Junior primary school(s) - Up to Year 3
  • Upper primary school(s) - Up to Year 6
  • Secondary school(s) - Up to Year 12
  • Community group(s)
  • Non-Professional - Individual
  • Professional - Individual

Prizes for each category:

  • Artwork displayed on iconic digital tower in Yagan Square, Perth CBD
  • $250 voucher for art supplies 
  • Finalist certificate
