WALGA welcomes changes to Long Service Leave (LSL) for LG employees

  • State Government announcement this week to change LSL Regulations provides clarity
  • Long Service Leave entitlement will now be based on the average number of hours an employee has worked during the accrual period, typically 10 years
  • Entitlement to LSL now “portable” within the Local Government sector. WALGA is pleased that the State Government has carried out a review of the sector’s Long Service Leave Regulations, clarifying regulations that have been difficult to interpret and apply.

WALGA President Karen Chappel acknowledges and supports the changes.

“We would like to thank the Local Government Minister Hon. Hannah Beazley for consulting WALGA in this review. We have been seeking clarity since 2013.

“Queries on Long Service Leave have been one of the highest inquiry items for our Employee Relations team here at WALGA.

WALGA also advocated for employees’ ability to cash out LSL, which will now be adopted.

“We are also pleased that the Department for Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries has substantially adopted our recommendations in the shared documentation and forms that will be used by Councils and Local Government employees for their LSL entitlements.

“We will work with the Department to educate the sector on the changes, which will start on 1 September 2024.”

Other significant changes announced include recognising that an employer and employee can agree to take long service in advance, where the employee has completed at least 7 years of ‘reckonable service.’
