Western Australian Local Government Association President Mark Irwin has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List for significant service to Local Government, to Surf Life Saving, and to the community.

First elected as a Councillor at the City of Stirling in 2015 and serving in his current role as City of Stirling Mayor since 2017, President Irwin is the longest serving Mayor at the City of Stirling.

President Irwin previously served on WALGA State Council from 2021 - 2023, before being re-elected as a Zone Delegate of the WALGA Northern Metropolitan Zone and to State Council in 2025.

President Irwin said being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the King's Birthday Honours list was an incredible honour and recognised the vital role of Local Government in WA.

"Being elected to represent and lead the City of Stirling has given me the opportunity to work alongside passionate community members and colleagues to help shape a vibrant, inclusive and forward-looking city," he said.

"Local Government is where decisions have the most immediate and meaningful impact on people’s lives.

"As WALGA President I remain committed to working with and strengthening Local Governments and communities across Western Australia."

WALGA Chief Executive Officer Nick Sloan said this recognition was reflective of President Irwin’s dedication to the Local Government sector and the wider community.

“WALGA congratulates President Irwin AM on his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia,” he said.

“Through his extensive public service over more than a decade at the City of Stirling and his current role as WALGA President, Mark Irwin strongly represents the Association’s 139 Member Local Governments and empowers them to deliver better outcomes for their communities."
