WALGA commends today's announcement that if re-elected, a Cook Labor Government will invest $30 million in changeroom upgrades, equipment and events to encourage more women and girls to get involved in community sport.

The announcement includes a $6 million program to encourage women and girls to be involved at a community level, and $24 million in changeroom and facility upgrades to break down barriers to participation.

WALGA Deputy President Paul Kelly said Labour’s announcement was a welcome recognition of the need for investment in women's sport but also emphasised the necessity for long-term, sustainable funding for sport facilities.

"Local Governments play a major role in planning, developing, and maintaining sporting facilities and with their local area knowledge are crucial stakeholders in the delivery of these facilities.

"With the State’s population growing and demand for sporting facilities increasing, today's announcement from the Labor Government recognises the need to ensure the community has access to facilities that meet their needs.

"We acknowledge the commitment is a one-off boost, rather than a long-term commitment."

In the 2024-25 State Budget, a temporary funding boost was given to cover the costs of the 2023-24 Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) projects, which is consistently oversubscribed.

Mr Kelly continued, "To keep up with the State’s growing population, it is essential that an incoming Government commits to raising CSRFF funding to $30 million each year on a long-term basis.

"We look forward to the announcement of the additional regional sporting clubs who will be delivered upgrades to their women's sporting facilities as part of this announcement."

In addition to increased CSRFF funding, WALGA's 2025 State Election Priorities also calls for a 10-year regional-level sporting plan to strategically guide investments in sports infrastructure across WA.
