Key Points
  • WALGA welcomes the announcement that an elected Dutton-Littleproud Coalition Government will invest $1 billion to revitalise the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program
  • WALGA's 2025 Federal Election Priorities calls for additional untied ongoing, formula-based targeted funding streams for Local Governments
  • This announcement also responds to advocacy from the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), which calls for $3.5 billion through five new formula-based, non-competitive funding programs for Local Governments across the country

WALGA welcomes the announcement that if elected, a Dutton-Littleproud Coalition Government will invest $1 billion to revitalise the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

The LRCI Program will be delivered through two streams, Resilience and Community Infrastructure and Roads, each worth $500 million.

The announcement is in line with WALGA's 2025 Federal Election Priorities which calls for additional ongoing, formula-based funding streams for Local Governments to provide certainty and enable effective planning for community needs, including $500 million per year allocated towards community infrastructure.

Importantly, it supports WALGA's advocacy to implement the findings of the Colvin Review to invest in Local Government Emergency Management through additional untied funding streams.

WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP welcomed today's announcement, highlighting the importance of dedicated funding streams for Local Government.

"The LRCI Program is a proven model of efficient and effective funding. With a non-competitive structure and funding allocation based on policy objectives, it provides autonomy for Local Governments to identify and prioritise local needs and ensures equitable service levels across all communities.

"By adopting untied funding streams, we can ensure that Local Governments have the resources they need to continue delivering essential services and infrastructure, fostering resilient and vibrant communities across the nation.

"WALGA calls on the Federal Labor Government to match this commitment and assist Local Governments in meeting the growing needs of their communities."
