A 7-year-old from the Shire of Pingelly is among the list of winners who saw their artwork displayed on the digital tower at Yagan Square last night as part of WALGA's 2024 Showcase in Pixels Art Competition.

This year's winners were announced at a special event at the Shoe Bar in Yagan Square with students, community groups and artists from across the State representing their local communities against this year's theme 'Heroes Among Us.'

Emma Eva, a 7-year-old from the Shire of Pingelly was awarded in the Junior Primary and 'People's Choice' awards for her artwork of a numbat that she was inspired to draw after learning that they are not only endangered but also Pingelly's emblem.

Emma's entry from the Shire and her parents told us: "From conservationists to bushfire volunteers, these people are protecting not just the numbats, but also Pingelly's natural environment, making them heroes to everyone."

WALGA's Showcase in Pixels is the pre-eminent Local Government art competition and has run since the early 1990s, originating as 'Banners on the Terrace' and evolving into an amazing digital display that sees both finalists and winners have their pieces displayed on the iconic digital tower at Yagan Square.

WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP said the event provided the opportunity to highlight the unsung heroes within the community.

"It was great to receive a large number of entries from all over the State, with artists representing their Local Government and showcasing the incredible people, groups, and organisations that make our communities such great places to live.

"WALGA is proud to have a long history of supporting arts and culture within the community, as Local Governments act as providers and operators of a variety of cultural facilities.

"Congratulations to all our artists and I look forward to seeing them return in 2025."

Arts and culture make our communities vibrant places to live, offering a range of benefits that contribute to overall well-being. Access to arts and culture fosters social cohesion, mental well-being, and education while driving economic outcomes through tourism and generating activity.

To support this, WALGA's 2025 State Election Priorities calls for the establishment of a $30 million per annum Community Arts and Cultural Facilities Fund to support the development and enhancement of arts and cultural infrastructure across WA.
