Preferred Supplier Program
WALGA's Sustainable Energy Project
WALGA has operated a Sustainable Energy Project since April 2022 that is an aggregate purchase arrangement which has delivered significant expenditure savings and carbon emission reductions to participants. The project is not a Power Purchase Agreement and delivers sustainability benefits via Carbon Offsets.

The Sustainable Energy Project was initiated through the WALGA Preferred Supplier Program to harness the collective purchasing power of the Local Government sector and deliver cost savings, sustainability benefits and administrative efficiency.

WALGA has estimated that the first three-year term of contract has collectively delivered cost savings of approximately $34 million for participating Local Governments and offset approximately 120,000 tonnes of Carbon.

WALGA is currently in the contracting phase for a new term of Contract following a tender process, with the new term commencing in April 2025.  There are 52 WALGA Members participating in the project and each Local Government participant follows their own governance process to determine their contractual commitment.

The supply of renewable energy is heavily regulated, and the use of Carbon Offsets ensures that generation is from a renewable source. The retailer to the project has obligations to deliver the capacity and reporting of this activity.
