Legislation reforms to the Criminal Investigation Act 2006 and Weapons Act 1999 will come into effect on 20 December 2024. These reforms aim to improve community safety and deter the carriage of edged weapons, including knives, in the community.
These changes include:
improvements to community safety by allowing officers to undertake non-invasive scans to detect knives and other edged weapons
new and harsher penalties to deter and hold offenders to account
creation of a new category of ‘edged weapon’ and place stricter controls on the carrying, possession, sale and supply of edged weapons (including knives)
penalties for anyone who sells or supplies a person under 18 years of age with an edged weapon
increased penalties for offences involving prohibited weapons.
Additionally, a police officer may require a person to stop and submit to a hand-held metal detector scan within a designated area. Visit www.wa.gov.au/cutknifecrime
