The Regional Telecommunications Review (the Review) is an opportunity for people living and working in regional, rural and remote Australia to share their views and experiences using telecommunications services.
Every 3 years a Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee (the Committee) is established to conduct the Review. The Committee’s findings and recommendations help set the Government’s approach to regional telecommunications issues and policy during the following years.
Telecommunications Service Resilience
Projects to be funded in Round 2 of the Commonwealth Government Mobile Network Hardening Program were recently announced by the Hon Michelle Rowland MP, Minister for Communications.
In Western Australia 92 projects across 72 sites have been provided $6.045 million in grant funding. Most of these projects are to upgrade batteries at Telstra mobile towers and exchanges to provide 12 hours of backup capacity.
This is a positive outcome for regional Western Australia from WALGA advocacy highlighting the need for more resilient telecommunications services, particularly during disasters when power supplies are often interrupted.
However, it is recognised that this does not cover all areas, and improvements to systems and processes are still needed when power is not restored within the operating time of the back-up.
Have your say
Sharing your views and experiences will help the Committee gauge the adequacy of telecommunications services and determine current and future needs. The Committee would also like to hear your innovative ideas about how to improve telecommunications services in regional, rural and remote Australia.
Have your say by completing the 2024 Regional Telecommunications Review Survey.
The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
