WALGA’s Employee Relations Service offers expert human resource management and industrial relations advice to our Local Government members.

As a registered industrial agent under the Industrial Relations Act 1979 (WA), we focus on delivering comprehensive support in industrial and employee relations matters, ensuring compliance and effective management practices.

We understand the complexities of workforce management within Local Government settings and strive to provide tailored solutions to address the unique needs and challenges faced by our Members. 

While we offer guidance and advice in industrial and employee relations, it's important to note that we do not provide legal advice.

Through our Employee Relations Service, WALGA aims to empower Local Governments with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate Human Resources (HR) and Industrial Relations issues effectively, contributing to better outcomes for both employers and employees alike.

WALGA Employee Relations provides professional negotiation and advocacy services in key forums such as the Fair Work Commission, WA Industrial Relations Commission, and the Equal Opportunity Commission. This comprehensive service covers preparation, presentation, and advocacy representation at conciliation conferences.

Subscribers gain access to expert advice via telephone and email on various employee relations and human resources matters. This includes assistance with enterprise bargaining, award interpretation, disciplinary actions, fitness for work, performance improvement, and the review of documentation to support effective management practices.

Subscribers receive assistance with the negotiation of enterprise agreements and the development of strategic bargaining approaches on a fee-for-service basis. This service proves invaluable, especially during formal negotiations involving employee representatives.

Access a wealth of template policies, procedures, letters, and checklists tailored to Local Governments. Additionally, subscribers benefit from ER guides covering essential topics like the disciplinary process, performance improvement, and COVID-19 FAQs. Specific resources are also available to aid in the potential transition from the Federal to the State industrial relations system.

Stay informed with regular ER Alerts delivered via email, covering a wide range of workplace relations issues relevant to Local Governments. These alerts encompass legislative and award changes, as well as current case updates. Furthermore, WALGA hosts free metro and regional HR Forums annually, providing subscribers with opportunities to engage with presentations on topical issues in the Local Government sector and network with peers.

Northern Territory

WALGA also has a formal agreement with the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory to deliver the Employee Relations service to all NT Local Governments who are members of LGANT.

Salary and Workforce Survey

Salary and Workforce Survey 2025-26

WALGA conducts the Local Government sector’s most comprehensive salary and workforce survey in Australia. The collective survey results can help guide your recruitment and remuneration strategies, inform workforce plans and help to measure performance across key HR metrics.

The survey is open to WALGA Employee Relations subscribers and LGANT members, and other WA and NT Local Governments that purchase the survey. Please see below for details on the fee structure.

Why should my Local Government complete the survey?
The WALGA Salary and Workforce Survey has been conducted annually for over 25 years, with 76 Local Governments participating in 2024. The more Local Governments who participate, the greater the quality of the resulting data.

Your Local Government can have up to four portal users, any of whom can log-in and complete sections of the survey.

If you participate, you will receive access to the online results and reports.  
 
What results will my Local Government have access to?
Powered by SalaryOne, the survey results can be viewed via an online portal, customised to your Local Governments needs using your unique dashboard. Features include:

  • salary data on a wide range of Local Government positions and filters to view salaries for comparable roles.
  • data can be viewed by SAT band, metro versus regional, Local Government and position.
  • a remuneration calculator support recruitment and human resource strategy development.
  • downloadable reports.
  • the ability to compare your Local Government with industry trends and benchmarks.
  • position description library to view and request sample PDs (for WALGA ER subscribers only).

How much does it cost?

The survey is free for WA and NT subscribers who participate.

Subscribers who do not participate in the survey and wish to purchase the report will be charged per the below fee structure.

Non-Subscribers who wish to participate and/or purchase are charged the same fee.

SalaryOne ensures the security, integrity and privacy of information submitted to and displayed in the portal. All access is subject to stringent login authentication and data encryption technology. Apart from the salary search, all data is aggregated and mostly shown as percentile ranges.
