Local Governments’ lead role in protecting and enhancing urban canopy has been recognised in this year’s Budget with the announcement of a two-year $3.75 million Urban Greening Grants Program to be deliver in partnership with WALGA.

Local Governments, with the support of their communities, have been working tirelessly to increase their urban canopy through tree planting, community engagement and modifications to their planning frameworks to protect trees on private land.

Expanding the Urban Canopy Grant program was a key priority in WALGA’s 2023-24 State Budget Submission. While the funding announced falls short of the $20 million over four years sought by WALGA, it will contribute to Local Governments’ already significant investment in the greening of our suburbs and regional urban centres, particularly in areas of high heat vulnerability and low canopy cover.
