WALGA consults with its Members on a variety of topics to inform our advocacy and service offering. The scope of our requests for feedback reflects the range of operations conducted by Local Government. Please see below for items for which we are currently seeking feedback from our Members.

Short-Term Accommodation: Policy and Guidelines

The State Government is currently undertaking consultation on its draft Position Statement: Planning for Tourism and associated Guidelines, as well as a proposed Registration Scheme for Short-Term Rental Accommodation. The public comment period ends on Monday, 7 March.

Following a webinar for the sector held in December 2021, the WALGA Planning and Building team has prepared a draft submission presenting the sector’s response to the Position Statement, Guidelines and Registration Scheme.

To view a copy of the draft submission, please click here or contact the Planning and Building team planning@walga.asn.au. Please provide any feedback on the draft submission by Friday, 28 January 2022.

Local Government Legislative Reform

The State Government is undertaking a consultation period ending on Friday, 25 February 2022 for a significant number of Local Government Act legislative reform proposals.

WALGA’s timeline to develop a Local Government sector submission on the Local Government Legislative Reform Program is as follows:

  • Tuesday, 23 November WALGA InfoPage was distributed to the Local Government sector requesting feedback on proposals. This paper includes advice on the sector's current position that are covered in the reform proposals, together with recommendations on new positions required on matters not previously canvassed.
  • Friday, 28 January 2022 – Local Governments requested to provide feedback to WALGA
  • February 2020 – Zone meetings to consider a draft sector submission
  • Wednesday, 23 February 2022 – Special meeting of WALGA State Council via video conference to endorse a sector submission
  • Friday, 25 February 2020 – WALGA to present a submission to the State Government, which Local Governments are also encouraged to do.

Statutory Review of the Western Australia Food Act 2008 (the Act)

The review will examine the operation and effectiveness of the Act in ensuring food for sale is both safe and suitable for human consumption and prevent misleading conduction in connection with the sale of food.
The two questions being asked as part of the review are:
  1. What is working well with the Act?
  2. What, if any, changes should be made to the Act? If you have suggested improvements please include any examples and studies that support your organisations.
Local Governments are encouraged to provide a council endorsed submission to the Department of Health by Monday, 14 March
WALGA will also be developing a sector submission and invite Local Governments to contribute by providing comment on the above questions via email to WALGA or sharing a copy of formal submission by Monday, 14 March.
