A simple road ribbon is the centrepiece of a WA campaign which allows people to spread road safety messages over the Christmas/New Year period.
The WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign brings attention to the number of people who are killed and seriously injured on WA roads each year and importantly, how this road trauma can be prevented.
The campaign commences on Sunday, 17 November aligning with the United Nations World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims; a day dedicated to remembering the millions killed or injured in road crashes and the families and communities who deal with the traumatic aftermath.
WALGA President Cr Lynne Craigie said the value and importance of Local Governments, State Government agencies, private organisations and community members working together to prevent road trauma could not be underestimated.
"Between 2013 and 2017, 9276 people were killed or seriously injured on WA roads, with almost 5400 of these on local roads," Cr Craigie said.
"We know one of the most effective ways to reduce this number is for everyone - across all spheres of Government, business, industry and community - to play their part in creating a safe system and a future of zero harm."
"This is where the WALGA RoadWise Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign truly shines."
"Since 1996, this campaign has brought together Local Governments, State Government agencies, community groups, local businesses and road safety champions from across the State to join forces for road safety."
"Whilst the road ribbon is well known and constant, the discussion around road safety is always evolving, which is vital."
"The road ribbon now provides an opportunity to aim for a safer festive season in 2019, celebrate local road safety achievements and infrastructure improvements, and look ahead to plan for a future with zero deaths and serious injuries," she said.
Local Governments and other organisations are hosting Road Ribbon events and displays during November and December, as well as sharing campaign messages on social media. Support your local Road Ribbon event and help contribute to road safety by:
- accepting that no one should die or be seriously injured on our roads
- wearing a free road ribbon and downloading (and sharing) a free e-ribbon
- chatting to loved ones about safe driving
- sharing the road ribbon message on social media, and
- prioritising the inclusion of road safety into organisational policies.
