Local Governments and members of the wider community are being encouraged to get their road

ribbons on as the WA Local Government Association’s (WALGA) RoadWise launches the 2016 Road
Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign.
The campaign commences on Sunday,
20 November, aligning with the United Nations World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, and runs until Monday,
9 January 2017.
WALGA President Cr Lynne Craigie said the
Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign allowed individuals to directly contribute to raising awareness of the importance of road safety over the festive season, whilst also acting as a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility – we all have a role to play.
“We encourage everyone to participate in the
Road Ribbon for Road Safety® campaign, including Local Governments, State Government agencies, private businesses and individuals.” Cr Craigie said.
“With many Local Governments, organisations and communities hosting road ribbon events and displays, participation in the campaign is easy.
“Support your local Road Ribbon event, organise your own event, erect a display at your workplace, wear a road ribbon, share the
Road Ribbon for Road Safety® message on social media or chat to loved ones about safe driving as we head into this very busy, very social time of year.”
“Basically we want you to get your road ribbon on and talk about it!” she said.
Reducing the risk of death or serious injury can be achieved through compliance with the road rules and simple behavioural changes, such as:
- turning off your mobile phone before driving
- adapting your speed to the weather, light, traffic and road conditions
- buckling up when travelling in a vehicle
- taking a break, having a rest or if possible swapping drivers to avoid the onset of fatigue, and
- if you are planning to drink, arranging a skipper, organising public transport or staying overnight.
So far, 159 people have died on Western Australian roads this year and 2,311 have been seriously injured[1].
