WALGA President Karen Chappel, responded to comments made by Premier Hon Roger Cook on a commercial radio station last week where he appeared critical of decisions made by Local Government Councils.
“The comments from the Premier are disappointing and not based in fact. Local Governments are highly accountable to the communities they represent. Generalised comments that are not reflective of the extraordinary work of Local Government across the State are unhelpful and unbecoming of the Premier"
Karen went on to say "Through direct community consultations on projects and initiatives; publicly accessible and live-streamed Council meetings; community access to Elected Members; and by supporting and liaising with community events and groups; Local Government is the level of Government most accountable to the community”.
