The WA Local Government Association (WALGA) advocates on behalf of Western Australian Local Governments and provides a range of services to support Local Governments to enhance community wellbeing and enable economic prosperity. To do this, we collect some information from our Members, employees and other visitors to this website.
 
WALGA is committed to protecting your privacy, and we facilitate responsible use and disclosure of any data that we collect from you.

WALGA uses a variety of physical and electronic security measures to your information secure from misuse, loss, or unauthorised use or disclosure.
 
Collection of personal information
 
Personally identifiable information includes any information that may be used to identify you, such as your name, IP address, home/business address, email or phone number. Sensitive information includes information about your racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, political opinions, household income or information about your health.
 
WALGA collects information about its customers and stakeholders:
  • in the performance of its services and functions
  • as required by law
  • through correspondence, communication and service requests from customers and stakeholders; and
  • through online data and metadata collection.
Generally, when users submit information to WALGA, we use that information to respond to their correspondence or service request.
 
Site data collected

When visiting WALGA’s website, we may log a record of the user’s visit. WALGA records this information:
  • for statistical purposes
  • to monitor use of WALGA’s website
  • to discover what information is most and least used; and
  • to customise the site for users.
The information logged when users access WALGA’s website may include:
  • details of the server and internet provider users are accessing WALGA’s website from
  • details of user’s access of WALGA’s website
  • details of the operating systems, devices and software used to access WALGA’s website
  • details of the performance of user’s access of WALGA’s website; and
  • details of any other website, social media platform, code or link that directed the user to WALGA’s website.
WALGA will not identify a user or their browsing activities except for in the following circumstances:
  • to investigate improper use of WALGA’s Internet facility, a breach of the law, misconduct or corruption; or
  • where requested by a law enforcement agency.

We may occasionally collect user data using a range of website/social media analytics tools, such as Google or LinkedIn Analytics. This data is only used to achieve broad insights, for example, to determine the city/country of our audience, to count the number of views achieved by a page/post, and/or to evaluate the number/quality of anonymous interactions over a set period. Our digital performance reports will never include any personally identifiable data.
 
Disclosure of information to third parties and data sharing

WALGA will disclose customer and stakeholder information to third parties in the following circumstances:
  • with the consent of the customer or stakeholder, express or implied;
  • as required by law or in response to a request from an investigative authority;
  • to complete the purpose or function for which the information was provided;
  • to improve the purpose or function for which the information was provided;
  • to customise content or measure effectiveness in conjunction with WALGA’s digital advertising channels; and
  • with government agencies and entities to improve the accuracy of customer information.
We endeavour to ensure organisations processing data on WALGA’s behalf also demonstrate best-practice data protection standards

Cookies are pieces of information or small files that WALGA’s website sends to a user’s device to record a user’s preferences when browsing WALGA’s website.
 
A cookie may remain on a user’s device after their session finishes. WALGA’s website uses cookies for the following purposes:

Accessing personal information

You have the right to access most personal information WALGA holds about you. If you want to access your information, or alternatively if you have a complaint concerning your information privacy, please direct your query in writing to the CEO, details below.
You are allowed to inspect all personal information held by us about you, take notes about or obtain copies of the information. WALGA may deny your request for access to personal information in some circumstances but if we do this then we will tell you why. WALGA may charge a fee for supplying the personal information.
It is important that the personal information we collect from you is accurate, complete and up to date. You can contact us at any time to update your personal information or to tell us that the information we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete.
Wherever it is lawful and practicable to do so, WALGA will offer you the opportunity to deal with us anonymously.

Online payments

Our event registration and training software do not process or store any credit card information. WALGA offers on-line payment facilities for events and training services. Our systems divert online payments to a secure gateway service provider where credit card transactions are processed securely, but no card details will be stored.
 
Informed consent
 
If we collect personal or sensitive information from you, we will always tell you how the information will be used, and we will use it only after we receive your express consent to do so.
