Local Government Legislative Reform

2023 saw the most significant changes to Local Government in Western Australia since the Local Government Act 1995.

WALGA, through consultation with the sector, successfully advocated for a number of the reforms, and was instrumental in helping shape the first tranche of the legislation.

The initial changes will benefit the community by modernising Local Government and reducing unnecessary red tape. As a consequence of the changes, the community now also have greater access to Council meetings and proceedings through the mandating of live streaming and recording of Council meetings.

We are trusted by our Members and respected by the State Government for our expertise and will continue to advocate for improvements to the legislation.
