Key Points:

  • Changes to the Caravan and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997 will enable Local Governments to approve temporary accommodation for up to two years
  • The amended Regulations will assist in alleviating housing stress, particularly in regional areas
  • Tiny Homes on Wheels (THOWs) are an emerging form of housing that offer an alternative and affordable temporary housing option

WALGA welcomes changes to caravan and camping regulations announced today by the Minister for Local Government the Hon Hannah Beazley MLA, which will allow Local Governments to approve camping, including Tiny Homes On Wheels, on private land for up to 24 months.

Councils will be able to develop a local policy to ensure that the length and type of approved camping is appropriate to their area.

WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP is pleased the changes will provide Local Governments with additional flexibility to address acute housing shortages.

“WALGA and Local Governments in the South West and Great Southern regions have been calling for a change to the regulations as another way to address the current housing crisis. The lack of housing in country WA is one of the biggest issues we hear from our Member Councils.

“These changes are another tool in the toolbox to help alleviate housing stress, including for local workforces or during recovery from a natural disaster.

“We welcome that Councils will be able to develop a local policy to guide approvals and provide for circumstances where longer term occupation of caravans may be appropriate.

WALGA will continue to work with the State Government in implementing the changes.
