Key Points
  • As part of the State Government’s Local Government Reforms, it will be discretionary for Councils to pay Elected Members superannuation from 1 February 2025.
  • It will be mandatory for Band 1 and 2 Local Governments to pay Elected Members superannuation from 19 October 2025.
  • The reforms are in line with WALGA’s advocacy for superannuation to be mandatory for Elected Members of Local Governments in Band 1 and Band 2 and optional for Councils in Bands 3 and 4.
From tomorrow, new provisions will be in place to streamline the process and mandate rules around Elected Member superannuation, reflective of WALGA’s ongoing advocacy.

The changes are part of the State Government’s Local Government Reforms and will mean it is mandatory to pay Elected Members in Band 1 and 2 Local Governments superannuation from 19 October 2025, with the option to pay by decision of Council.

In line with WALGA’s advocacy, it will remain optional for Band 3 and 4 Local Governments to pay superannuation to Elected Members by Council decision.

In 2022, an advocacy position was endorsed by WALGA’s State Council that stated Local Government’s supported:
  • for superannuation to be mandatory for Elected Members of Local Governments in Salaries and Allowances Tribunal (SAT) Band 1 and Band 2; and
  • that superannuation payments to Elected Members of Local Governments in SAT Band 3 and Band 4 should be optional and determined by Council.
Superannuation for Elected Members acknowledges the significant time and dedication that they commit to serving their local community.

WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP said, “As the authoritative voice and trusted partner for Western Australian Local Government, outcomes such as this highlight WALGA’s ability to listen to its Members and effectively represent and advocate on the issues that matter most to Local Governments and the communities they represent.”

President Chappel acknowledged the Minister for Local Government, the Hon Hannah Beazley MLA, for listening to WALGA and the views of the sector in implementing these reforms.
