Workshop: Delivering Environmental Outcomes through the Planning System

25 Oct
25 Oct

Description

Local Government can utilise the power of the Western Australian planning system to improve environmental outcomes during the land development process.

The aim of the workshop is to assist Local Government staff that support planning teams to better understand State and Local Government planning processes, and key intervention points at both the strategic and statutory planning levels to improve environmental outcomes.

Information covered will include an overview of the WA planning framework and State Planning initiatives, and mechanisms available to Local Government through Local Planning Strategies, Schemes and policies.  Key topics include:
  • native vegetation protection
  • urban canopy retention
  • wetland and creek line buffers
  • habitat connectivity
  • environmental water provisions
  • flood management
  • bushfire risk management
  • movement of terrestrial fauna in urban areas
  • environmental sensitive design for buildings
The program will include a Masterclass on ‘planning for non-planners’ delivered by Andrew Trosic, Director of Development Services at the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.  Representatives from WALGA, the State Government and Local Government will also present projects that demonstrate innovation and leadership in the integration of environmental considerations into decision making processes.

The workshop is relevant for officers that provide advice and input into Local Government planning processes and projects, including sustainability, environment and infrastructure teams.

This workshop is also available online for $33 (regional Local Governments only).

For more information, please contact WALGA's Environment Policy Team or call (08) 9213 2065.
