WALGA invites you to attend a workshop on Harnessing the Benefits of Volunteerism in Natural Areas.

Volunteers provide an essential resource for Local Government to manage many natural areas.  This workshop will provide information on best practice approaches to volunteer management and explore contemporary issues including the new Work Health and Safety Act. A facilitated workshop session will identify key resources to assist Local Government to build upon current approaches to managing volunteers.

Topics include:
  • The principles of successful volunteer management,
  • Overcoming common barriers to engaging and retaining volunteers,
  • The environmental, economic and community development value of volunteers,
  • Volunteer insurance obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020,
  • Successful working arrangements with Friends of groups, including strategic planning, funding programs and operational support,
  • Undertaking landcare activities regional areas,
  • Use of experience-based and wellness volunteering models,
  • The operation and value of intermediate groups that serve volunteers; and
  • Expectations versus available support: a community group's perspective.

The program features speakers from peak NGOs, Perth NRM, LGIS, SERCUL, Local Government, Landcare groups and Friends of groups.

The event is relevant for Local Government staff in environment and sustainability, health, governance and community development areas from across the State.

The workshop has been organised with a collaborative of partner organisations led by Perth NRM, and follows Perth NRM's Celebrating Community Driven Conservation on Thursday, 19 May.  It forms part of a week of events and activities that mark the UN's International Day for Biological Diversity on Sunday, 22 May.  

This will be a COVID-safe event, with attendees required to abide by State Government Public Health and Social measures at the time and meet WALGA’s public health requirements.
