Join us at the annual WALGA Local Government Planning Showcase to share new practice, policies and projects, and build relationships and knowledge across the sector.

Local Government planners, State Government and Industry will have the chance to hear from speakers on exciting planning projects, and their outcomes, across the Local Government sector. 

The session includes a buffet lunch and access to the WALGA Trade Exhibition, onsite at the Crown.

Showcase Speakers:

Local Planning Policy 7.2 - Reducing, Refunding and Waiving Application Fees
Anthony Denholm from the City of Subiaco will share the ‘pre-lodgment public consultation concession’ in recently adopted LPP 7.2. The concession provides a 25% discount to development application fees where residents have consulted on their plans with neighbours pre-lodgment. The policy encourages proactive community consultation and building local community networks.

Baby Steps: A Best Practice Approach to Child Care Policy Review
The City of Stirling will present on its recent review of Local Planning Policy 6.4: Child Care Premises. This resulted in a revised policy that was developed in a way that enables this form of development in appropriate locations while safeguarding the amenity of the community to which the development belongs.

Legal Update: Planning
Craig Slarke from McLeods will provide a legal update on recent SAT and Supreme Court planning decisions, including the relevance of environmental considerations to the exercise of planning discretion, and the importance of sound local planning policies for influencing decision outcomes.
 
Guildford Heritage Area Local Planning Policy
The City of Swan will speak on the community consultation process that occurred whilst preparing their Guildford Heritage Area Local Planning Policy.

Planning Reform Panel Discussion 
The Showcase will then be closed by a panel discussion titled, ‘Reflections on Reform: A Local Government Perspective’. This panel will be lead by speakers from the City of South Perth (Donna Shaw) and City of Cockburn (Carol Catherwood).

Third Party Advertising
Alex Bott from the City of Belmont will share the City’s experience and lessons learnt from managing applications for third-party advertising proposals, including through multiple SAT appeals.
 
East Wanneroo District Structure Plan
Melissa Shaw and Pas Bracone from the City of Wanneroo will explore the City’s experience of working with the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage in this complex area expected to house the next great expansion of Perth’s urban fringe, focusing on challenges and lessons learnt in this challenging area.
