Local Governments Leading Emissions Reduction

The Cities Power Partnership recently hosted two climate-focused events in Busselton and Perth, with 45 Local Governments coming together to discuss opportunities for action on climate change and to capitalise on the benefits of the state’s emerging clean economy.

The events provided an important opportunity for networking, knowledge-sharing and collaboration between Councils on climate-forward initiatives. Additionally, they reinforced that WA Local Governments are increasingly stepping up to lead on climate change action, in order to ensure that their communities are set up for a prosperous future.

Urban Canopy Grant Success

More than 4,000 new trees were planted by 18 Local Governments as part of the 2021-2022 Urban Canopy Grant Program. The program provided $750,000 to Councils to increase tree canopy in high urban heat risk areas.
 

WALGA State Budget Submission

The initiatives in WALGA’s Budget Submission will deliver significant benefits to communities across the State. Key climate change adaptation priorities include a State Urban Forest Strategy, Urban Canopy Grant Program and increased funding to protect coastal erosion hotspots. Read more.

Joining Forces to Combat the Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer

Local Governments from across Perth recently came together to learn more about the exotic pest, the polyphagous shot-hole borer, in a workshop led by DPIRD with a special expert guest from the University of California.

Work Starts on the WA Pest Parrot and Cockatoo Strategy

DPIRD is collaborating on the development of a Pest Parrot and Cockatoo Strategy for WA. WALGA is a member on the Strategy Steering Committee and will continue to provide updates as the Strategy progresses.

Bureau of Meteorology Releases Biennial State of the Climate Report

The report draws on the latest climate research, encompassing observations, analyses and future projections to describe year-to-year variability and longer-term changes in Australia’s climate.

New Directions for Forest Management in WA

DBCA is inviting comments on the Draft Forest Management Plan 2024-2033 by Sunday, 18 December 2022. The Draft Plan seeks to introduce a new approach to forest management. Read more here.

Think Climate Change. Be Waterwise.

Around half of Perth’s drinking water comes from desalinated seawater. The Water Corporation’s campaign Think Climate Change Be Waterwise  reminds us that water is too valuable to waste.
