What the FOGO?

Congratulations to the City of Vincent for their sweeping victory in the Waste Management category of the 2022 National Awards for Local Government!

The Awards are an annual celebration showcasing the best Australian Local Government initiatives and achievements that respond to community needs by overcoming barriers through new contemporary and creative solutions.

The City has a target of zero waste to landfill by 2028 and has transformed their waste services over the last 12 months to become more sustainable, increase diversion from landfill and pursue cleaner resource recovery in line with the City's Waste Strategy and the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030.

It’s winning project What the FOGO? We've got a Better Bin System Sorted! included:
  • Replacement of a 2‑bin system with a 3‑bin Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) system
  • Implementation of innovative education and engagement programs to embed the FOGO system.
Full details of the City’s winning project are available from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts website.

Meet the GREAT Gang!

The City of Cockburn has forged a group of local legends to bring the WasteSorted GREAT Sorts characters to life.
Members of the GREAT Gang come from all sorts of backgrounds and feature in a series of short videos dispensing pearls of waste minimisation wisdom through clever and insanely catchy rhymes.

The videos are part of a suite of waste education materials, developed with funding from the Waste Authority WasteSorted Community Education Grants Program, that will help to promote the City’s initiatives for giving to op shops, recycling, earth-cycling, avoiding plastics and taking items to the Henderson Waste Recovery Park.

Need some inspiration on how to encourage your communities to ‘be like the Gang and be a GREAT Sort’? Check out the videos here.

Let’s Talk About
Environmental Regulation Reform

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation discussion paper Environmental Regulation Reform: A Strategic Review of Regulatory Delivery and Fees for Industry Regulation has been released for comment.
Feedback provided on the discussion paper will help inform the drafting of amendments to the Environmental Protection Regulations 1987 (EP Regulations), including the development of a new Schedule 1 and related fee framework. A range of proposed regulatory reform concepts will impact Local Government premises currently regulated under Schedule 1 of the EP Regulations.

Closing date for submissions is 5:00pm on Tuesday, 13December2022.

Following the briefing session held with the Department on 12 October, WALGA will be hosting a Local Government consultation session for sector feedback on the draft submission developed by the Association in response to the proposed reforms.

When: 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Wednesday, 26October.
Where: Online. Register here.

If you would like to provide input on the WALGA draft submission, email Rebecca Brown, Manager Waste and Environment, or call on (08)92132063. To access the recording of the briefing session, email Candy Wong.

Masterclass Series on Going FOGO

The New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (NSW EPA) has developed a series of masterclasses for Local Governments transitioning to household Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) services.
The classes are open to all Local Government officers who will be involved in FOGO roll outs including staff working in waste, emission reduction, communications or procurement.

Each class will cover a different topic and will be delivered by a diverse range of Australian and international speakers over six weeks on Wednesdays from 26October to 30November 2022.

Please note, these webinars are for the NSW context and some of the legislative and policy settings may be different in Western Australia.

Sign up for the entire series, or just the classes you’re interested in. Register here.

For more information on what will be covered in the masterclass series, visit the NSW EPA website. If you have any questions, email the NSW EPA Organics Unit.

National Recycling Week is Coming!

National Recycling Week is just around the corner and there’s no better time to get your communities thinking about recycling and waste avoidance.
Held every year during the second week of November since 1996, National Recycling Week will be taking place from 7 to 13 November 2022 and will explore the idea that Waste isn't Waste until it's Wasted.

By organising a communications blitz or any number of events, you can help your communities learn about how to use resources by giving them a second life, reduce the need for newly produced resources, and recycle not just more but better.

Craving ideas? Visit the WasteSorted website for a dash of inspiration on how we can all be GREAT Sorts!
