 No Levy Change 2020/21
The Environment Minister, Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, has announced there will be no change to the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Levy (WARR Levy) for the 2020/21 financial year.
The Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 includes a review of the scope and application of the WARR Levy to ensure that it meets the objectives of the Strategy.

It is anticipated a consultation paper on the WARR Levy will be released soon, for the usual 12-week consultation period.

LG Focus: Paperless Kojonup
A New Year resolution has hit the Shire of Kojonup, as the Local Government has now moved towards a paperless records management system!
In an effort to cut down on paper waste generation, the Shire of Kojonup are moving to a paperless records management system. As of January, the Shire requested to only receive correspondence through electronic means to cut back on the amount of paper used.

With thousands of tonnes of paper wasted each year, the Shire hopes that changing to a full electronic records management system will help decrease their paper intake, as well as increase management efficiency.
If you would like to learn more about the paperless Local Government, please contact the Shire of Kojonup.

Arts, Crafts and Lots of Fireworks!
With funding from the State Government, WALGA is working with Local Governments to continue to increase awareness of the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) at community events throughout Western Australia.
The Denmark Arts Markets saw the public’s ability to get creative and show off their talents for art, crafts and culture. They also showed the Waste Team how talented they are with the amount of containers they cashed in at the event. With a total of 1920 containers collected, it was a fantastic way to start the new year and decade!

At the City of Perth’s Australia Day Skyworks celebration, thousands of people flocked to Perth’s foreshore to celebrate the national holiday and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display. The team also had help from three young superstars who were just as excited to give money away as the people receiving it. Overall, the event’s collection reached a total of 1290 containers!

Visit WasteNet to keep up-to-date with the CDS at events, or click here for more information on WALGA's involvement with the Scheme.
