LG Focus: Bench to Bin Bay

The City of Perth has been busy repurposing materials from old street benches and litter bins to create a stylish bin bay for Perth City Farm.

When the time came to refurbish the park benches next to the kangaroo sculptures outside Council House, the City Depot Team decided to upcycle the wooden slats. By combining these with a sheet of rescued aluminium and some wheels from an old shopping trolley, they created a sleek new bin bay for Perth City Farm’s Containers for Change collection.

To find out more about this upcycled project, visit the City of Perth website.

LG Focus: Busselton Bustling with E-waste

The clouds parted one brisk winter morning to deliver what was an epically busy E-waste Drop-off Event in the City of Busselton on Saturday, 26 June.

Attended by over 300 vehicles on the day, more than 8 tonnes of e-waste was collected. Thanks to Mark Wong and his team at the City of Busselton whose assistance ensured the event was a success.

WALGA Preferred Supplier WorkPower worked tirelessly at the event to unload the e-waste and material collected was recycled by Total Green Recycling. This event was funded through the New Industries Fund which is managed by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.

Eager for more information about E-waste Drop-off Events? Please email Rebecca Brown, Manager Waste and Recycling, or call on (08) 9213 2063.

LG Focus: Diving Deeper into Digital

The City of Canning is acting on its commitment to waste reduction by encouraging residents to download a digital copy of their 2021/22 Waste Guide.

The City has reduced the number of printed copies of its Waste Guide by more than two thirds from 30,000 in previous years to 8,000 for this financial year.

Residents also have the option to pick up a printed copy from several Local Government run facilities including the administration building, libraries and leisure centres.

Don’t be a goose. Check out the City’s new digital Waste Guide here.

Expression of Interest

The Department of Health have commissioned WALGA to implement a Program with the aim of upgrading existing or installing new sharps collection containers in public places.

This Program aims to improve the disposal network for sharps in public places to make it easier to dispose of these items and reduce the risk of inappropriate disposal and the potential for needle stick injuries.

To ensure Local Governments have sufficient information and can raise any issues relating to this Program, WALGA will be holding an online information session.

When: 11:00am to 11.30am on Tuesday, 27 July. Register here.

The Community Sharps Program Expression of Interest and Application Form are available here. Completed forms must be submitted by 5:00pm on Friday, 6 August 2021.
