Melville Win Award for Talking Trash
A huge congratulations to the City of Melville, winners of the WARR Awards for Community Engagement Success of the Year!
The WARR Awards recognise organisations and individuals who are going to great lengths to improve and grow the industry and are run by the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR) and Inside Waste magazine.

The City of Melville has invested heavily over the last 18 months in the way it engages and educates residents on all things waste. From rap waste videos, to gaming apps and interactive information sessions, the Local Government has changed the way it communicates to the public.

Additionally, a Christmas waste campaign in 2018 showcased the Local Governments waste team who dressed up as “Sustainable Santa” and “Excited Elf”. The $400 campaign encouraged residents to drop off an additional 3.5 tonnes of recycling and help divert it from landfill, as historically over the holiday period the extra recycling ended up in the park bins or in general waste bins. The campaign also created a 50% reduction in calls from people asking when to put their bins out. It reached almost 100,000 people and engaged more than 27,000 people.

LG Focus: Stirling Effort
There’s lots happening in waste at the City of Stirling, with an upcoming clothing drop-off day, new journey of waste videos and the 'Wonder of Waste' school competition.
The City is hosting a Charity Clothing Drop-Off Day on Saturday, 7 December where members of the community can bring their unwanted clothing, textiles (curtains, blankets), shoes, towels, bedding, accessories and jewellery, books, toys, DVDs/CDs and games. At the last drop-off day the City collected 23 tonnes of donations for various charities.

To provide residents with a better idea of what happens to their waste, the City of Stirling has developed short videos showing the journey of household waste, recycling and garden organics. To view the videos visit the City’s website.

The City of Stirling launched its first 'Wonder of Waste' schools competition, which was open to all students who attend primary schools in the City. The program required students to answer eight multiple choice questions on the City’s website, that tested their knowledge of recycling. The three schools with the highest number of individual entries won cash prizes up to $1000 to be spent on waste and recycling services for their school.
