Full House For Urban Forest Conference

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the sold out Urban Forest Conference at Curtin University this Friday.

Speakers include Town of Victoria Park Mayor Karen Vernon and City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin, both of whom lead Councils embarking on exciting projects to protect and improve urban canopy in Perth.

Both Council leaders will sit on a panel to discuss valuing urban canopy as a community asset, developed and maintained in partnership with Local Governments.

The Town of Victoria Park has allocated $1 million from the 2019/20 Annual Budget to implement an Urban Forest program which targets to increase the Town’s tree canopy cover from 10% to 20%

WALGA Project Cuts Council Energy Bills

Participating WALGA members have saved $6.2m on energy costs and offset 22,710 tonnes of carbon to date under the Sustainable Energy Project.

The project, now in its third operating quarter, delivers aggregate energy access through a centrally negotiated contract to 48 participating Local Governments.

Secure Your Ticket to Transport & Roads Forum

Don’t miss the opportunity for knowledge sharing and networking at the 2023 WA Transport and Roads Forum on Wednesday 8 March at Crown Perth.​​

Speakers include Department of Transport Director General Peter Woronzow, National Emergency Management Agency Co-Ordinator General Brendan Moon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Transport Minister, Jessica Stojkovski MLA, and RAC WA Social and Community Impact Group Executive Patrick Walker. 

Speakers will cover topics including the use of recycled materials in roads, cost effective solutions to reduce serious road crashes, dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters, Aboriginal employment, managing freight and native vegetation clearing. Across all topics there will be a focus on the commitments proposed for the new State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement. ​

Inclusive Grants Program Launched

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) is offering grants between $20,000 and $150,000 for projects targeting low-participation groups.
 
The Sport and Recreation Inclusive Participation Grants Program aims to create welcoming environments and opportunities for:
  • people with disabilities
  • Aboriginal people
  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • adolescent girls
  • people from the LGBTQI+ community
  • seniors
  • disengaged youth.
Applications close on Monday 13 March. Application forms can be requested from DLGSC.

The 2023/24 CoastWA grant programs opening soon will provide funding for projects to manage and protect the WA coast.
 
WALGA and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage will hold a workshop to provide an overview of the programs, tips to improve your application, and an opportunity to ask questions and discuss project ideas.

Feedback Sought on Labour and Recruitment Contract

WALGA's PSP011 Temporary Labour and Recruitment contract is under review. 
  
WALGA is seeking member feedback from Human Resource and Procurement Officers on:
  • Current supplier performance
  • New supplier requests - to be invited to tender
  • User experience accessing this contract
  • Any other feedback or improvement recommendations

Vale Brian Piesse

Ex-Shire President Brian Piesse has passed away after a short battle with cancer. 

Brian was Shire President at Donnybrook Balingup between 2017-2021, and previously served four years on the Council of the Shire of Capel.
 
Brian served on the Boards of  the South West Development Commission, Edith Cowan University, South West Catchment Council and Kings Park, among others.

Brian leaves behind his beloved wife, Lucille, two daughters and multiple grand children.
