Waste Export Ban Webinar

The Federal Government is progressively regulating the export of waste plastics, including mixed plastics (July 2021), and single resin or polymer type plastics (July 2022).

WALGA is bringing together plastic recyclers and other industry experts to discuss the implications of the Waste Export Bans and the steps necessary to close the loop and recycle materials in WA.

When: 10:30am to 12:00pm on Tuesday, 30August.
Where: Online. Register here.

For more information, email Rebecca Brown, Manager Waste and Environment or call on (08)92132063.

Committing to a Better Waste Future

Five more WA Local Governments have committed to the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO Program to implement source separation of food and garden organics in households.

The Cities of Nedlands and Subiaco, Towns of Claremont and Mosman Park, and the Shire of Esperance join 18 other Local Governments that have committed to the Program since it was introduced in 2020.

Three of the Local Governments (Claremont, Mosman Park, and Nedlands) will start the transition to 3-bin FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) services from a 3-bin GO (Garden Organics) service, while Subiaco currently provides a GO bag and Esperance has a 2-bin system.

Read the media statement here or visit the Waste Authority website for more information about the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO Program.

To Buy, or Not to Buy? That is the Question

Share Shed Bassendean is a ‘library of things’ run by dedicated volunteers seeking to promote a more circular economy through borrowing.
By signing up, members of the Bassendean community get free access to a range of extremely useful but infrequently used communal items from lawnmowers to camping gear, without the need to purchase them for individual use.

If you know of any unused equipment that could be better put to use by sharing it with the community, consider donating it to Share Shed Bassendean. You can always borrow it back when you need it!

This initiative was established by Repair Café Bassendean with funding from the Waste Authority through the 2021-22 WasteSorted Grants.

Now that you’re feeling inspired, check out the 2022-23 WasteSorted Grants Program to kickstart your waste behaviour change idea.

Closing the Loop on Cosmetics

An 8-week trial is currently being conducted to inform the feasibility of a national product stewardship scheme for cosmetics.
From 22 July to 16 September 2022, consumers can bring any brand of used cosmetic makeup items to collection points in twelve participating retail stores across Australia, including Myer Perth and Joondalup. With support from the Australian Government, the trial aims to test different processing methods and research new ways of recycling cosmetics to achieve higher value end products.
