2022 Year in Review

As 2022 comes to a close, we wanted to share some highlights from the last year of working with the sector to progress action in the environment space. WALGA would like to wish you all a happy holiday period and looks forward to working with you in 2023.

Overhaul of National Environment Law Announced

 
The Federal Government has committed to an overhaul of Australia's environment laws in response to the Samuel Review, including the establishment of a Federal Environmental Protection Agency and a new Nature Positive Plan.

Climate Action Funding for Regional Communities

Two Local Government Regional Climate Alliances have been awarded a second and final round of project funding to deliver localised climate action projects in their regions, as part of the Regional Climate Alliance Pilot Program.

WALGA Energy Project Delivers Substantial Savings

With two operating quarters now complete, substantial benefits have been extended to Members, including a saving of 13,500 tonnes of carbon and estimated cost savings of $3.5 million. Watch a video by project partner Synergy here.

Local Governments Leading the Way on Climate Action

The Shire of Harvey has become the 50th Local Government to sign WALGA’s Climate Change Declaration, committing to emissions reduction and delivering locally specific climate action for their community.

National Climate Change Statement Delivered

The Federal Minister for Climate Change, Chris Bowen, recently delivered Australia’s first national climate statement in Parliament.

Easy Access to LiDAR Data

Landgate’s Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) repository is available for use by State and Local Governments and industry via DataWA. This repository, funded via Capture WA, includes data collected since 2017, with the latest addition captured in February 2022. Read more here.

Report Pest Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo

Members of the public are being asked to report declared pest birds to support surveillance and control programs being carried out by DPIRD. This includes the sulphur-crested cockatoo, a newly detected pest bird in Western Australia.

Elected Members Network on Sustainability in the City of Bayswater

Elected Members from different Councils came together for the second time, to discuss sustainability interests and to visit Environment House and the Eric Singleton bird sanctuary in the City of Bayswater.

Inaugural Climate Action Reference Group Meeting

The City of Melville’s inaugural Climate Action Reference Group recently held the first of its monthly meetings to discuss ideas on reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the City’s Climate Action Plan.

National Commendation for Renewable Energy Program in the City of Cockburn

The City's Renewable Energy Program that reduces carbon emissions by 73,000 tonnes pa has been highly commended in the 2022 Local Government Professionals Australia Awards for Excellence

Provide Feedback on the Draft Forest Management Plan 2024-2033

The plan outlines the approach to protecting and managing WA’s south-west forests and provides direction on how new Government policy settings will be achieved. Submissions close on Sunday 18 December.

Have Your Say on the New Disaster Ready Fund

The National Emergency Management Agency is consulting on the design of the Disaster Ready Fund to curb the impacts of natural hazards.  Applications for Round 1 are expected to open in early 2023. Complete the survey by 20 December.

This recent report by the Climateworks Centre analyses targets, policies and programs announced by Australian Federal, State and Territory Governments on climate action.

New ISO Net Zero Guidelines Released

At the recent COP27, the worldwide ISO Net Zero guidelines were released. The free guidelines provide principles and recommendations for all organisations to achieve net zero emissions as soon as possible - and by 2050 at the latest.
