Child Safe Awareness Policy Consultation Open

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and the Department of Communities (DoC) are developing a Child Safe Awareness Policy for Local Government (Draft Policy).

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse recognised the valuable role Local Governments play in developing local communities and promoting community safety.

Recommendation 6.12 of the Royal Commission recommended that, with support from governments at the national, state and territory levels, Local Governments should designate child safety officer positions from existing staff profiles.

In June 2022, the Department of Communities hosted a co-design process with more than 35 Local Government representatives from across the State to develop a draft policy template for Local Government regarding their role in fulfilling the functions of Recommendation 6.12.

DoC and DLGSC are seeking Local Government feedback on the Draft Policy by Friday 12 August 2022. The draft Child Safe Awareness Policy, Consultation Paper and guiding questions can be viewed here.

DoC and DLGSC are hosting an online information session on the Draft Policy on Thursday, 14 July 2022, 10am - 12:00pm. Please register at csaroyalcommission@communities.wa.gov.au

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples hold a special place in our communities and connect the broader population with a wealth of history, tradition and culture which enriches our society.  Our work regularly takes us across the State and as such WALGA would like to acknowledge the many traditional owners of the land on which we work throughout Western Australia. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
