Financial Fundamentals – Budgeting is designed to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the Local Government budgeting process. Participants will gain an understanding of the legislative environment that applies to the local government budgeting process, including the application of the Australian Accounting Standards.

The preparation of a variety of budget work papers will be covered and it will be explained why they are utilised as the core component of building a budget.

The course content is structured into three key sessions which cover an introduction to the legislative framework, preparing budget work papers, through to the compilation of the Statutory Statements. 

Important: Participants are required to bring a laptop as two exercises will require the use of Microsoft Excel (for data input only). A basic understanding of Microsoft Excel is therefore required.

Target Audience

Suitable for Local Government Officers who would like an introductory level course to increase their knowledge of the Local Government budgeting process.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, participants should be able to understand:

  • the common definitions and terms used in accounting and budgeting
  • the legislative framework that applies to the preparation of an annual budget
  • the process of how to build a budget
  • how to utilise budget working papers; and
  • the process of compiling a budget.

  • Requested must be received in writing via email, letter or fax.
  • Cancellations received within 5 working days of the start of the course will incur a 20% administration fee of the full course cost.
  • Non-attendance or cancellations received within 2 working days of the start of the course will incur the full course fee.
  • Participants can only transfer course dates once without incurring the full fee.
  • Substitutions can be made at any time and no fee will be incurred.
