Planning Practices – Advanced uses practical examples to guide participants on how to formulate a good planning outcome based on a planning framework which has a strategic focus supported by sound statutory planning processes. The exercise of planning discretion in decision making is discussed and the importance of the quasi-judicial role of Council is stressed.

The course focuses on helping participants understand how planning processes must be consistent and transparent and when decisions are made they are done so in the public interest.

Target Audience

  • Officers - Suitable for Local Government Officers who are from other professional disciplines, or those that have a planning background from overseas or interstate who need to understand the WA planning system.
  • Elected Members - Suitable for Elected members who have completed the Planning Practices - Essentials course and who want to test their knowledge through discussion of practical examples of strategic and statuary applications.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of completing this program, participants should be able to:
  • identify the principles that underpin a good local government planning system
  • understand the importance of developing a strategic led planning framework for Council
  • identify the principles that underpin decision making on planning applications before Council; and
  • understand the matters that should be and should not be considered in making planning decisions.

Cancellations, transfers and substitutions
  • Requested must be received in writing via email, letter or fax.
  • Cancellations received within 5 working days of the start of the course will incur a 20% administration fee of the full course cost.
  • Non-attendance or cancellations recieved within 2 working days of the start of the course will incur the full course fee.
  • Participants can only transfer course dates once without incurring the full fee.
  • Substitutions can be made at any time and no fee will be incurred.
