Council Member Essentials

Overview

Council Member Essentials is a training program for local government council members. The training should be designed to provide council members with the skills and knowledge required to perform their role well. All Western Australian council members will be required to complete five units within 12 months of being elected.

Council members have a unique and challenging role. They oversee significant budgets and make difficult decisions that impact the well-being of communities. The aim of the training is to build council member capacity and ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities. The training should provide them with theoretical knowledge and practical examples and should ensure they are aware of and understand their obligations under the Local Government Act 1995.
