The Environmental Planning Tool (EPT) is a sector specific portal, offering access to a broad range of data relevant to land use, infrastructure and environmental planning and reports linked to regulatory processes.

The key benefits of using the EPT include significantly increased time efficiency in meeting regulatory requirements through:
  • the ability to quickly generate desktop assessment reports for native vegetation clearing permit applications for road and other infrastructure projects
  • the ability to quickly undertake desktop assessments for any site or an area of interest to inform land use planning, infrastructure and environmental planning
  • the ability to undertake desktop assessments required for licencing of 'prescribed premises', consistent with Guidance Statement: Environmental Siting
  • access to bushfire risk management assessment tools and mapping to support bushfire risk management plans
  • access to mapping tools to inform project planning, natural area mapping and management monitoring, and
  • visualization of a wide range of regularly updated data, relevant to Local Government operations by staff across Local Government (via single subscription).

EPT News

In June, EPT Users Group has been established on WALGA's Environment Platform, designed to facilitate networking among Local Government.

Local Governments subscribing to the EPT can sign up to the EPT Users Group on here. For best performance, it is recommended that Firefox or Chrome are used to access the platform.

The EPT Users blog will be used to communicate future EPT updates. Other benefits of joining the EPT Users Group on the Environment Platform include opportunities to share ideas of using the EPT to deliver projects, make suggestions for new functionality and discuss EPT matters with fellow EPT Users. nment operations by staff across Local Government (via single subscription). To keep up to date with EPT upgrades, check the EPT Update document ( last updated 26 November 2019).

Accessing the EPT

There are two options for accessing the EPT. Use of the EPT is subject to specific conditions.

1. EPT DESKTOP application provides access to the full suite of data, reporting functions and drawing functions.  Subscriptions are required to gain access - current subscribers can download the new desktop application using the instructions below: 2. EPT WEB VERSION allows data viewing and reporting on selectable layers. This version does not include any of the data creation functions (annotations) but is useful when needing to quickly check information during site visits or without the need to download the desktop application.

EPT Training

Free EPT training is delivered to subscribers, demonstrating the EPT's capabilities linked to specific tasks.  An option of in-house training within Local Government offices can be arranged by contacting Business Development Officer (Environmental Planning Tool), Renata Zelinova on 9213 2521 (Tuesdays to Thursdays).

Subscription to the EPT represents great value for money when compared to the expense of work tasks involving external spatial data searching/sourcing, data compilation and mapping actions. Local Governments and WALGA Associate Members can subscribe to the Environmental Planning Tool Service. Subscription revenue assists WALGA to ensure the EPT is maintained to a high standard, with the most current and comprehensive range of data; to continue developing the most useful functionality, value-added tools and mapping ability for users needs and to provide ongoing excellent service to our subscribers.

Not sure if you want to subscribe?

Try our smaller, public version. The public version of the EPT is still available free of charge. To access the public version you’ll need to download the desktop application by following the instructions for either Windows or Mac users above.

*Please note that the public version is only designed for community use. This version has a limited range of datasets and reporting functionality.

Local Governments considering subscribing are welcome to attend an EPT demonstration delivered as part of scheduled EPT training and can request a free trial login to assess the benefits of the EPT to their operations. The trial login will provide access to the full range of data and all reporting options. To arrange a trial login, contact Business Development Officer (Environmental Planning Tool), Renata Zelinova on 9213 2521 (Tuesdays to Thursdays).
