Greening our Suburbs

Shade is so important for our wellbeing. Shady spaces are highly valued and more trees and more shade create healthier, happier communities. This will be particularly important as the climate warms due to climate change.

Local Governments work hard to increase and enhance our tree canopy, but they need more support. WALGA is calling for a $30m commitment towards a comprehensive tree-planting program. This program will improve wellbeing and build resilience to cope with the impacts of climate change.

Fewer trees lead to hotter streets in our cities and towns, and difficulty mitigating the effects of climate change.

Committing to a comprehensive tree planting program would increase shady spaces, and enhance overall wellbeing.

It will also deliver a strong return for our economy, creating more than 230 jobs and adding $33.4 million to Gross State Product.
