Local Governments recognise the importance of community arts, cultural development and heritage in local communities. Local Governments support arts and culture in their communities, through the provision of arts and culture infrastructure (galleries, libraries, art, and museums) events, festivals, public installations and preservation of local history and stories.

In a paper prepared for Cultural Ministers on Cultural Funding by Governments 2015-16, WA Local Government expenditure on arts and culture was approximately $263.7 million highlighting the significant collective investment by Local Governments.

WALGA is a member of the Arts Leadership Group. The group's role is to set a long-term strategic direction for the arts in Western Australia, and set the infrastructure, policy and funding priorities for consideration by successive State Governments.

WALGA is working with the State Government and the Chamber for Arts and Culture to further support Local Governments to use cultural planning framework to support the business of Local Government.
